Never before have I stepped into a salon of any sort to get my nails done. As far as I was concerned it was for people who really cared about their nails or 'posh' people. Not for the likes of myself who bites her nails all the time, sports the eternal chipped polish look and isn't at all fancy in the slightest. Thats just how I felt, until I stepped into Ultimate Hair And Beauty in the GPO arcade off Henry St. I origionally went in to use a gift card and write about it, but it didn't work out as planned. But on the plus side it means that there will be yet another post where I can tell you all about that another time.
Being a total novice to this, I went through a list of some hairdressers and nail salons around the city center and picked UHAB based on their seriously competitive prices. I also noted at what an extensive range of treatments they had on offer. Not only can you go in for all the normal hair cuts, treatments and styling, but theres also a barbers and a huge range of beauty treatments on offer, including make up, waxing, tanning and facials to name a few. The one that stuck out for me was the massages which I've not seen offered by many places before.
I'll be honest and say as far as I was concerned Shellac nails were a waste of money or something you would only get for a special occasion, but I was totally wrong. Not only are they an affordable €25 from UHAB, but from sitting in the treatment room watching other clients come and go, it was clear to see that everyone and their mammies love to get them regularly. It was nice to hear the staff there talking to clients by their first names and hearing them ask about their children or holidays. Its clear that they have a lot of loyal customers that come weekly to them. The shade I picked was a dark blue with tiny glitter running through it. Several coats of this along with a top coat in between were applied after my nails were shaped and buffed within an inch of their life. Within half an hour I had the perfect fingers I've ever seen. Sharmila was the lovely girl who did my nails for me and I can't say enough good things about her. Not one thing she did wasn't talked through and fully explained to me, which I was so grateful for as I'd never had this done before. I was put at ease quickly and was able to ask all sorts of questions.
Every part of this business was exceptionally clean, bright, friendly and had a lovely busy but happy to help atmosphere. There are over 35 staff and the business has been running for over 20 years, which just goes to show how good they are at what they do! I had the pleasure of talking to Laura who is one of the assistant managers at UHAB. When asked about how the business says afloat through the recession, the answer was simple; they have the best prices, loyal customers and a lot to offer. They have a loyalty scheme and special offers and packages.
You can see their website here, and call or email to book an appointment or look up prices and whats on offer. They have an active Facebook page thats updated regularly but I was shocked to see that their Twitter account hasn't been updated since 2013. Considering they advertise both on their website, in store and even on the sign at the front of their shop, I think this is something that could be improved a little. I also wanted to note that their communications in house seem to be a little lacking, but I'll post more about that when I write about Beutifi.com.
Despite that, I would still recommend a trip to them the next time you need a little pamper. They are central to all shops and public transport, have lots to offer and amazing prices. Not to mention a friendly face when you walk in the door!
